What is Sustainable Land Management?

Sustainable Land Management (SLM) is using the land, which incorporates soil, water, and air, for the benefit of current and future generations. This is done while ensuring that the land is maintained and sustained so that it not only provides for the needs of current human beings and animals but those that are to come as well.

With the rapid population growth and climatic changes, SLM has become even more critical for securing the current generation and the future ones. SLM can only be achieved when there is a healthy interaction of all the land resources and humans eco-social activities. So whether this involves farming, extracting minerals, or real estate planning, it has to be done in a way that doesn’t deplete the resources.

The objectives of Sustainable Land Management are simple; to combine policies, actions as well as technology to curb climatic changes that threaten life. These objectives can be summarized in the following five points:

Productivity

One of the main aims of SLM is to produce. This can either be in the form of agricultural and non-agricultural produce as well as conservation. It is meant to enhance the production of all human and animal needs while conserving and improving the land for future use.

Protection

It is vital to safeguard the quality of land, water, and air resources for the sake of the future. This is, however, done having in mind the need for diversification of species and the need to maintain and preserve the purity of each organism.

Security

There is a need to protect all the resources such that the risk of production is lower, and there are less adverse effects. Therefore, SLM methods that pay attention to these factors are encouraged to combat the negatives such as climatic changes.

Viability

The reason that all SLM efforts need to be well thought of is to ensure that they are suitable for a particular environment. If the actions are not viable, then there will be no point to it, and nothing will be gained from them.

Accessibility

The SLM efforts need to be socially acceptable to enable accessibility to the benefits. If the benefits are not accessible, then it is likely that they will fail.

Land Sustainability is supported by policies that allow people to be in charge of how to manage the resources available. This enables them to reap full benefits from their actions, but they are also held responsible for their misdeeds.

There is a need to provide more for the growing population without depleting the resources for future generations. That is why there is a need for more socio-economic balance so that more sustainable benefits are achieved and there is still space for the future.
